Liine have just released a “total recall” tool for Max4Live. It’s called Kapture, and it was initially created for Richie Hawtin to use in his Plastikman Live Tour. His sets rely on complex routings, controller configurations, feedback loops and other combinations of instruments and effects, and he needed a tool that could capture every single parameter at any given time, aswell as recalling the snapshots at any given time. Kapture does just that – with one click you can save the instances you want, or reload a previous saved snapshot. That’s the beauty of it!
Like the guys at Liine said, sure… it would be nice to have “that feature”, or do “that thing”, but hey! while other people try to make money out of selling crappy plugins for outrageous amounts of money, these guys released a FREE, perfectly stable plugin that does what it sais on the tin: Recall the state of an Ableton Live set at any given time! No tricks, no hidden stuff, just a good simple plugin, that you can rely on!
Here’s a short funny story about the development of this plugin:
“One of the interesting things about developing Kapture was how clear the needs were, and how short the deadlines were. The needs were very clear as the whole Ableton Live set for Plastikman Live was already nearly complete and ready to go. The deadlines were very short as the premiere was coming up soon at Timewarp. Developing software in these conditions is very challenging, but also very rewarding. We literally did not sleep for several days at the “dress-rehearsal” in Mannheim, squeezing in beta testing (and fixing!) of Kapture between sonic blasts and mesmerising video calibrations and tests. Coding while your ribcage is rattling to bass is quite an experience!” – Quote from Liine Blog
Now I just have to say a few words about the man behind all of this, Richie Hawtin. The guy is a pioneer of electronic music since his early days, as a teenager, and some of his trakcs are considered all time “techno classics”.
And if you’d ask a random 20 year-old teenager who Bob Moog was, I’ll bet he’d have no clue – but if you’d ask him who Richie Hawtin is, I’m sure he’d tell you that like me, he danced ’till he couldn’t stand up on one of his shows.
He and a few other great people are doing a fantastic job with Minus, his record label, releasing good music, doing interviews and answering people’s production/technical questions, and while other big DJ’s and producers carefully guard their “secret weapons”, Richie Hawtin is sharing all his tools and knowledge with the whole world. Before releasing Kapture, Richie & Minus released a pack with Live sets for Ableton Live that are also free to use and abuse in any possible way (get them here!).
In the past, he also worked with Native Instruments, on developing and improving Traktor Scratch.
You can download Kapture here.
Make sure you check out the Minus website for some other cool stuff!
Personal Note:
Thank you Richie Hawtin and Liine for sharing this! I’m looking forward in seeing what you’re up-to next!
Loved your show here in Romania, and I can’t wait for Marc and Magda to arrive
– Keep up the good work!
