It’s that time of the year again… they gave us a list, we voted, and now the results are in.
I’d just like to say a few words about this poll, before I’ll give you the results. Back in the day, when DJ Mag had this fantastic idea to start a poll/chart for DJs, for me at least, this used to mean something. I’m saying it used to mean something, because now it doesn’t!
It was a way for us “humans” to see who’s hot, and who’s not. It was as simple as that. And the guys at DJ Mag did their jobs very well. Now, I’m not saying they are not doing their jobs right now or anything like that, but I really think this poll has gone a long way from what it used to be, and not in a good way.
There are a lot of great DJ’s out there, who play some amazing sets, and do some impressive things behind the deck, but we don’t see them charted. Why not?! I personally know 3 amazing DJs that go around the world all year long, from Miami to Ibiza, who don’t get the credit they deserve.
This poll used to be about DJing, and nowadays it seems it’s more about producers. That’s a shame!
Anyway, the results are in, and you can judge for yourself:
1) Armin Van Buuren
2) David Guetta
3) Tiesto
4) Deadmau5
5) Above & Beyond
6) Paul Van Dyk
7) Gareth Emery
8 ) Markus Schulz
9) Ferry Corsten
10) Axwell
The entire chart is available at DJmag.com
I just have one more thing to say, then I’m off to get myself a cup of coffee.
Don’t think for a second that I don’t appreciate their work, I just think that the utility of this poll, and the purpose it was created for are no-longer useful.
You can clearly see from the top10, the 1st half (1-5) is occupied by DJs who gained more popularity (since 2008) because of their productions mostly (Armin released “Imagine”, Tiesto “Kaleidoscope” and so on), and the 2nd half (6-10) is filled with people who’s work is mainly DJing. It was very predictable…
Now, do you understand what I’m trying to say? What do you think about this? Who did you vote?
Leave a comment below, it’s a very interesting topic to me.
